Time to file nominating papers for city, school elections

The filing period is open through Sept. 18 for candidates for city councils and school boards. The regular election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4.

City council members serve four-year terms, staggered so only a portion of the council members are elected in each election. Mayors serve two-year terms except for the Jefferson mayor. Council members and mayors whose terms expire at the end of 2025 are:

Churdan – Mayor Joleen Killeen; Council members Teresa Cook, Mary K. Vogel and John McCormick. Voters will also elect a council member to fill a vacancy.

Dana – Mayor Mandy Sims; Council members Anthony Sims, Christopher Vargas and Sean McClanahan. Voters will also elect a council member to fill a vacancy.

Grand Junction – Mayor Gerold Herrick; Council members Paula Hoskinson, Lora Lyons and Dennis Jacobs.

Jefferson – Council members Harry Ahrenholtz, Darren Jackson and Pat Zmolek.

Paton – Mayor Steve Burrell; Council members Zach Schweers and Diane Hanlon.

Rippey – Mayor (the seat is now vacant); Council members Mark Day, Ned Johnston, and a council member to fill a vacancy.

Scranton- Mayor Jerry Boyd; Council members Dustin Gibson and Annette Brown.

School board members serve four-year terms, staggered. Greene County Community Schools board members whose terms are expiring are Cindi Daubendiek, Michelle Fields and Bonnie Silbaugh. Paton-Churdan Community Schools board members whose terms are expiring are Zach Schweers, Mitch Stream and Dennis Tilley.

Nominating petitions are available at the county auditor’s office or on the Iowa Secretary of State website. Candidates for city offices should file their signed nominating petitions in the auditor’s office. Candidates for school board should file their nominating petitions with the school board secretary.

Early/absentee ballots can be requested now through Oct. 20. Early voting will start Oct. 15 at the courthouse in Jefferson; the auditor will begin mailing early/absentee ballots that day as well. The last day to vote early is Nov. 3. Polls will be open from 7 am to 8 pm on Election Day.
